The field of knowledge management focuses on how organizations can most effectively store, manage, retrieve, and enlarge their intellectual properties. The repository view of knowledge management emphasizes the gathering, providing, and filtering of explicit knowledge. The information in a repository has the advantage of being easily transferable and reusable. But it is not easy to use decontextualized information, and users often need access to human experts. This book describes a more recent approach to knowledge management, which the authors call "expertise sharing." Expertise sharing emphasizes the human aspects -- cognitive, social, cultural, and organizational -- of knowledge management, in addition to information storage and retrieval. Rather than focusing on the management level of an organization, expertise sharing focuses on the self-organized activities of the organization's members. The book addresses the concerns of both researchers and practitioners, describing current literature and research as well as offering information on implementing systems. It consists of three parts: an introduction to knowledge sharing in large organizations; empirical studies of expertise sharing in different types of settings; and detailed descriptions of computer systems that can route queries, assemble people and work, and augment naturally occurring social networks within organizations.

Business tourism is a newly coined terminology in social sciences and management literature. It is defined as individuals traveling and staying outside of their hometowns for not more than one successive year for the purpose of enjoyment and other drives (e.g., learning and business activities). Key business tourism activities include attending a variety of meetings, conferences, and workshops as well as exhibitions. Understanding the negative and positive aspects of business tourism is essential to promoting employee learning and knowledge transfer skills. Accelerating Knowledge Sharing, Creativity, and Innovation Through Business Tourism is an essential reference source that discusses how differences in cultures, communities, rituals, norms, and scope of business tourism could influence knowledge sharing practices. Moreover, this book promotes an understanding on how to learn from different cultures and enhance absorptive capacity by interacting with different personalities and cultures. Featuring research on topics such as knowledge management, social capital, and consumer behavior, this book is ideally designed for business professionals, managers, administrators, hotel executives, IT specialists, executives, entrepreneurs, managing directors, and students looking to boost their existing skills and expertise with innovation and creativity by interacting with others and in a new context.

Today, decision making demands transparency, robustness, and resiliency. However thoughtfully they are devised, decisions made by governments and enterprises can often trigger immediate, passionate public response. Expertise Under Scrutiny shows how leaders can establish organizational decision making processes that yield valid, workable choices even in fast-changing and uncertain conditions. The first part of the book examines the organizational decision making process, describing the often-contentious environment in which important environmental health and safety decisions are made, and received. The authors review the roles of actors and experts in the decision making process. The book goes on to address such topics as: · The roles of actors and experts in the decision making process · Ethics and analytics as drivers of good decisions · Why managing problems in safety, security, environment, and health Part II offers an outline for adopting a formal decision support structure, including the use of decision support tools. It includes a chapter devoted to ELECTRE (ELimination and Choice Expressing Reality), a multi-criteria decision analysis system. The book concludes with an insightful appraisal and analysis of
