Andrew Hayes, a brilliant but troubled musician, has been haunted since childhood by memories of his muse. One night from a San Francisco stage, he spots her, but before he can reach her, she vanishes from sight. Desperate to find the woman, he accepts a curious offer to stay in the city, moving into a dilapidated Victorian under going renovations that stir up far more than dust. Andrew's life soon becomes even more chaotic with the arrival of martini-swilling ghosts and a troupe of flesh-and-blood stoner spiritualists bringing bad tidings from the Great Beyond. The dark side of his obsession creates visions both thrilling and menacing, and as he struggles to solve the mysteries threatening him, Andrew discovers his life is repeating a refrain more deadly than he'd ever imagined. Inspired by the sexy noirs and comedies of the past, Grave Refrain transports the reader to a place where the things that go bump in the night not only thrill you, but might just take your breath away for good.

Wiley is a professional poker player in Portland who keeps vigil on the seedy streets of the city’s darker side. He’s no stranger to violence, but he’s got a good heart and a noble streak that his friends and family know is a mile long. His enemies often see a streak of a different sort, particularly when he teams up with this best friend, Leon, and the two are simultaneously beloved and feared among those who know them. Wiley is also a man who solves problems for his friends. The murder of a young musician who is close to his extended family puts Wiley in a vengeful frame of mind. He follows the evidence through the darkest corners of the city. When the trail points to Hawai’i, a place in which Wiley has never set foot but seems lately to be calling him home, he heads for the land of his ancestors in the hopes of finding justice for his young friend. Reminiscent of the classic noir masters but with a modern twist all his own, Lono Waiwaiole is increasingly recognized as one of the groundbreaking masters of noir fiction. Polk is an old semi-literate Greek immigrant and disillusioned Communist who hungers for respect, especially from young Rudy, whom he likes to think of as his son. Rudy, whose father died young, hungers for the life experience of this strangely appealing social misfit. The two spend a day in Coney Island seeking not so much amusement as each other. Polk's resistance to telling the unpalatable truth about himself is matched by the boy's insistence on hearing it, as well as by his youthful dream of a perfect revolutionary society, even if that must trample hapless individuals like Polk. The comedy of Polk's antics in his quest for admiration leads time and again to defeat throughout the day, from which Rudy tries to rescue him. Polk is in the end rescued only by his acceptance of his fate and by the devotion of 'his son." But not even the life experience he has wrested from the old man can keep Rudy from his youthful Utopian illusions.
