#1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • This ebook edition contains a special preview of Dean Koontz’s The Silent Corner. Past midnight, Chyna Shepard, twenty-six, gazes out a moonlit window, unable to sleep on her first night in the Napa Valley home of her best friend’s family. Instinct proves reliable. A murderous sociopath, Edgler Foreman Vess, has entered the house, intent on killing everyone inside. A self-proclaimed “homicidal adventurer,” Vess lives only to satisfy all appetites as they arise, to immerse himself in sensation, to live without fear, remorse, or limits, to live with intensity. Chyna is trapped in his deadly orbit. Chyna is a survivor, toughened by a lifelong struggle for safety and self-respect. Now she will be tested as never before. At first her sole aim is to get out alive—until, by chance, she learns the identity of Vess’s next intended victim, a faraway innocent only she can save. An analysis of GHG Intensity targets, underlying indicators, rationales, real-world applications, and implementation issues. Greenhouse gas intensity targets are policies that specify emissions reductions relative to productivity or economic output, for instance, tons CO2/million dollars GDP. By contrast, absolute emissions targets specify reductions measured in metric tons, relative only to a historical baseline. This report looks specifically at intensity targets and explores their underlying indicators, rationales, real-world applications, and implementation issues. It finds that although intensity targets are often dismissed as being environmentally lax or deceptive, they nonetheless could be useful policy instruments, when properly used, for furthering significant and real commitments to reducing greenhouse gases.

The advent of instruments capable of measuring sound intensity, which represents the flow of energy in sound fields, has revolutionised audio-frequency acoustical metrology. Since publication of the first edition, two International Standards for the use of sound intensity for sound source power determination, and one International Standard for soun

This report summarizes (1) the findings of a research study on the applicability of using high intensity reflective sheeting on overhead signs, and (2) the implementation of recommendations evolving from these findings through elimination of the illumination on many overhead signs in Virginia. A survey was conducted to determine the percentage of overhead signs meeting the criteria, developed in the research, under which the illumination could be eliminated if they were refurbished with high intensity sheeting, and the plans of several proposed projects were reviewed to obtain an estimate of the percentage of signs on which lighting could be eliminated through the use of the high intensity material. Also, data were collected relative to the installation, energy and maintenance costs for lighting overhead signs. The study concluded that the illumination could be eliminated on approximately 45% of the existing signs and 50% of the proposed signs through the use of high intensity reflective materials. The benefits anticipated from the implementation of the program include enormous money and energy savings, a significant reduction in the exposure of maintenance personnel to hazardous working conditions, and improved services to the motorists.

The effects of several parameters on the behavior of a runoff hydrograph were analyzed. The temporal distribution of rainfall was simulated using three synthetic storm patterns where the temporal location of the maximum burst was modified; the antecedent soil moisture condition was simulated using three infiltration capacity curves (Horton's Equation); and the severity of the storm was simulated through return periods of 2, 25, and 100 years. The resulting hydrographs from the Virginia distribution and the national distributions were analyzed.
