Here is a helpful guide, A-to-Z guide on the structures of chemicals implicated in contact dermatitis. It describes each molecule along with its principal name for classification. The dictionary also lists the most important synonyms, the Chemical Abstract Service (CAS) Registry Number that characterizes the substance and its chemical structure, and relevant literature references. This guide is a must-have for each physician involved with the diagnosis and treatment of patients with contact dermatitis and allergic skin disease.
Conservation of Wood Artifacts

The impetus for this book was the desire to systematically organize the extant literature on the conservation of cultural property made of wood, from its beginnings before the Christian Era to the year 2000. Various published reviews and monographs, including Holzkonservierung (Wood Conserva tion) published by the senior author in 1988, have appeared over the years, especially in English and in German. They have provided exemplary treat merit of individual areas or aspects of wood conservation, but a comprehen sive, up-to-date exposition of historic and current developments has been lacking. The diverse professional fields of the authors, as well as their insights into methods of conservation and restoration of wood artifacts in Europe, North America, and Asia provided a solid basis for the success of this under taking. One of the goals during the examination of the literature was that not only well-known conservators and scientists from countries that are leaders in wood conservation should be represented, but that less well-known, often not as readily accessible contributions should also be included. Only in this manner was it possible to draw a comprehensive picture of the national and international state of wood conservation. The Art and Archaeology Technical Abstracts (AATA) of
Hazardous Pollutants in Biological Treatment Systems

Hazardous pollutants are a growing concern in treatment engineering. In the past, biological treatment was mainly used for the removal of bulk organic matter and the nutrients nitrogen and phosphorous. However, relatively recently the issue of hazardous pollutants, which are present at very low concentrations in wastewaters and waters but are very harmful to both ecosystems and humans, is becoming increasingly important. Today, treatment of hazardous pollutants in the water environment becomes a challenge as the water quality standards become stricter. Hazardous Pollutants in Biological Treatment Systems focuses entirely on hazardous pollutants in biological treatment and gives an elaborate insight into their fate and effects during biological treatment of wastewater and water. Currently, in commercial and industrial products and processes, thousands of chemicals are used that reach water. Many of those chemicals are carcinogens, mutagens, endocrine disruptors and toxicants. Therefore, water containing hazardous pollutants should be treated before discharged to the environment or consumed by humans. This book first addresses the characteristics, occurrence and origin of hazardous organic and inorganic pollutants. Then, it concentrates on the fate and effects of these pollutants in biological wastewater and drinking water treatment units. It also provides details about analysis of hazardous pollutants, experimental
Microbicides for the Protection of Materials

Pages: 497

Type: BOOK - Published: 2012-12-06 - Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
This book is chiefly intended for those who are using microbicides for the protection of materials. Another purpose is to inform teachers and students working on biodeterioration and to show today's technical standard to those engaged in R&D activities in the microbicide field. When trying to classify, or to subclassify, material-protecting microbicides according to their mode of action, e.g. as membrane-active and electrophilic active ingredients, it turned out that a clear assignment was not always possible. For that reason the author has resorted to chemistry's principle of classifying according to groups of substances (e.g. alcohols, aldehydes, ketones, acids, esters, amides, etc.), thus providing the first necessary information about the micro bicides' properties. The description of the various groups of substances includes, whenever possible, an outline of the mode and mechanism of action of the active ingredients involved. The effective use of microbicides presupposes knowledge of their character istics. That is why the microbicides' chemico-physical properties, their toxicity, ecotoxicity, effectiveness, and effective spectrum are described in greater detail. As mentioned before, the characteristics of microbicides play an important role. They have to be suited to the intended application to avoid detrimental effects on the properties and the quality of the material
Primary Wood Processing

Authors: John C.F. Walker
Categories: Technology & Engineering
Type: BOOK - Published: 2006-09-13 - Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
This book is primarily a general text covering the whole sweep of the forest industries. The over-riding emphasis is on a clear, simple interpretation of the underlying science, demonstrating how such principles apply to processing operations. The book considers the broad question "what is wood?" by looking at the biology, chemistry and physics of wood structure. Wood quality is examined, and explanations are offered on how and why wood quality varies and the implications for processing. Finally, various "industrial processes" are reviewed and interpreted. All chapters have been written by specialists, but the presentation targets a generalist audience.

The Role of Sorbents in Sampling and Analysis of Emerging Pollutants in Indoor Environments

Authors: Carmen Garcia-Jares
Categories: Science
Type: BOOK - Published: 2010 - Publisher: Nova Novinka
In the last few years, the concern about pollutants present in indoor environments has greatly increased since in developed countries people spend large amounts of time indoors. The markedly growing consumption of cosmetics, air fresheners, house-cleaners, biocides, as well as the increase in the use of new building materials in carpeting, paints, furnishings, etc, may turn our homes, schools, offices and workplaces into harmful microenvironments. Inadequate ventilation coupled with the slow indoor degradation processes may increase indoor pollution levels. This book presents methodological developments for the analysis of pollutants in indoor air, focusing the attention on emerging contaminants and biocides that can be found both in the air gas phase, as well as associated to the suspended particulate matter and settled dust.
